How we rate outlets
We sample each outlet's 25 most recent articles: headline, a short snippet, link and date only, from the last 30 days and back to 120 days if needed.
Every outlet gets a tier: Tier 1 for established newsrooms, Tier 2 for real outlets with a narrower or specialist reach, Tier 3 for smaller or newer sites, blogs and press-release wires.
Bias combines three signals: how an article frames a story compared with rated Left and Right outlets covering the same event, which outlets cover the same stories and blindspots, and labels for other political articles.
Outlets with 25 articles are approved automatically and re-checked at 50 articles and every 30 days. Outlets with too little political coverage stay unrated until there is enough. Approved outlets count in coverage bars; press-release wires never do.
The Sumzly owner reviews these results and can override any of them.
